Lucid dreaming#

Lucid dreaming is a technique where you become conscious and aware that you are dreaming while still asleep, giving you the ability to guide and control your dream experience. Sleep as Android helps induce lucid dreams by playing subtle audio cues and gentle vibrations directly during your REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep phase - the state where your most vivid and memorable dreams occur.

How It Works#

Although smartphones and wearables do not record brainwaves directly (EEG), Sleep as Android tracks movement and sleep patterns to estimate your sleep cycles and identify REM phases with high accuracy.

  1. REM Detection: The app monitors your sleep activity to detect when you enter a dreaming phase.
  2. Cue Delivery: Once REM sleep is detected, the app plays a familiar audio cue, gentle vibration, or light flashes.
  3. Dream Awareness: Hearing or feeling the cue while dreaming acts as a “reality check,” helping your conscious mind realize you are inside a dream without waking you up.

💡 Training Tip: Audio cues work best when paired with daytime mental prep. Practice reality checks during the day whenever you hear your chosen cue sound so your brain recognizes it automatically while dreaming.

How to Enable Lucid Dreaming#

  • Audio & Vibration Settings: Go to Settings → Sleep tracking → Lucid dreaming.
  • Light Cue Settings (Optional): Go to Settings → Services → Smart light → Lucid dreaming (requires a connected Smartlight, Sleep Phaser or Sleep Mask.).

Configuration Options#

Setting Description
Sensitivity Adjusts how quickly or strictly cues trigger based on sleep phase progression. Lower sensitivity if cues trigger while you are still awake.
Later Delays the first cue after REM is detected, allowing you to settle deeper into the dream phase.
Preview Plays a test cue so you can adjust volume and feel. (Note: During preview, both phone and wearable vibrate; during actual sleep, only your wearable will vibrate if connected).
Ringtone Choose your audio prompt. Default: A soft voice saying “You are dreaming”.
Vibrate Enables haptic cues. If a wearable is paired, vibrations are sent only to your wrist to avoid waking a partner.
Volume Sets cue loudness. Keep this low enough to enter your subconscious without waking you up.
Force Headphones Only Routes audio exclusively to connected headphones rather than the main speaker.
Repeat Sets how many times the sound or vibration repeats per cycle.

❓ FAQs & Troubleshooting#

Why am I hearing cues while I am still awake?

If cues trigger while you are still trying to fall asleep, reduce the Sensitivity setting or increase the Later delay option so the app gives you more time to reach deep/REM sleep before starting.

Should I use headphones or phone speakers?

Headphones provide a clearer audio cue without disturbing others. If using headphones, enable Force Headphones Only and run a test preview prior to sleeping to verify your device’s Do Not Disturb (DND) settings don’t block media audio.

Will my wearable vibrate instead of my phone?

Yes! When tracking sleep with a supported smartwatch or fitness tracker, tactile vibration cues are automatically routed to your wrist.
